Steenberg holds the distinction of being the oldest farm in the picturesque Constantia Valley, which is generally considered to be South Africa’s premier wine growing region. With its cool, sea-facing slopes and majestic granite ridges, this farm has developed a worldwide reputation for producing excellent wines.

The land was originally granted to the widow, Catharina Ras, in 1682, and wines were first produced on the farm in 1695. First known as Swaaneweide – the feeding place of swans – the farm was only later renamed as Steenberg, in honour of the imposing mountain which towers over it.

The property was then eventually passed down through many generations of the Cape’s legendary Louw family, spanning the course of some 300 years before being sold to JCI in the early 1990’s, when it was redeveloped as a championship golfing estate, hotel and premier winery. In 2001, Steenberg Vineyards and the luxury 5 star Steenberg Hotel, became part of the Mantis Collection, one of South Africa’s foremost hospitality groups.

Steenberg Vineyards is a member of the Mantis Collection, an exclusive group of Boutique Hotels and Game Reserves situated in exquisite locations throughout South Africa and the world.

The addition of Steenberg to the Mantis Collection has added to the unique diversity of the Collection. Much as the art of winemaking blends aromas, flavours and characters, the Mantis Collection’s blend of luxury accommodation, fine dining and remarkable experiences, creates the perfect marriage for the discerning connoisseur.

The Mantis Collection’s philosophy is to always take the utmost care of the smaller things in life, knowing if this is perfected, then greater things will follow – a philosophy not dissimilar to the age-old alchemy of winemaking.
